Any tips on entering & exploring Romania?

Ignatius asked:

I’m American and will be traveling into Romania in a few weeks by train. We will be staying in the capital, but are open to day trips if anyone has a suggestion for something cool nearby.

I keep hearing mixed reviews of the country, which seem to stem from a shady past and more recent improvements. Has anyone been there recently that can tell me what to expect?

Any recommendations for a day trip OUT of Dusseldorf, Germany?

Carol C asked:

Hi all….
I will be in Dusseldorf (Germany) for 5 days and had another day that I was planning on taking a day trip….say leave very early in the morning and come back at night….Any recommendations where I should go? From looking at the map…it seems like Amsterdam, Brussels and Frankfurt are all close by cities….where should I go? I want to sight see and pretty much open to whatever…..I am a 30 year old woman, American and traveling alone….My travel motto is “when in Rome, do like the Romans”….so I don’t need anything fancy….just want to take advantage that I am in Europe and since I will see Dusseldorf for 5 days, I can get out and see something else! By the way, I see the ICE train is the way to travel there!

Any tips or recommendation are truly appreciated!!! thank you!

Traveling through Europe?

SDR asked:

I’ll be an 18 years old next summer, and I will be traveling through Western Europe. It will be my second time in Europe, and I know French fairly well. I want to go from the area around Nice, France to Crans-Montana, Switzerland. What are some good ways of going from one to the other, but I’m not sure of means of travel besides train. Also, what are the requirements for an American to rent and drive a car in Europe.

Travelling by train in England and Germany?

sparx_91 asked:

Hey everyone,

So I’m going to be flying over from America to England in early september. I’m having a mini-vacation in Germany (2 days), before catching a hop-flight to London.

I’d like to buy a train pass that covers all of England and Germany for 3 days. (I have to travel by rail from London to my school, as well).
Could anyone recommend some cheap passes that include both of these countries?

Im 17, so I should be classified as a youth passenger, if that helps.

Thanks in advance for any info. =D

Is this too much travelling for 40 days?
I dont want to just focus on two countries, i want to see more than that, but i don’t want to overdo it and not have any time to relax.

Costs:
Plane ticket to Europe: $1500
Eurorail pass: $833 (1 month)
Eurostar pass to Brussels: $90
Bus from Brussels to Paris: $50
Flight from Paris to Madrid: $120
Flight from Barcelona to Geneva: $100
Separate train rides from Vienna-Prague and Prague to Berlin $200
Museum tickets: $300
Souvenirs: $200
emergency money: $100
Bus Tickets in the cities: $150
Entertainment: $100
Total: $3743
Food: $34 a day= $1360 (times 40)
Housing: $35 a day (some nights on train) (times 40) = $1400
Grand Total: $6500
Is this a realistic budget? especially, are the lodging and food cost reasonable. I plan on staying in mostly youth hostels or overnight on the train. I do know that it costs extra for a bed on the train too.
Oh, and i’m under 25, so i get all the youth discounts on the eurorail pass and for museums and stuff.

Ok, so i do realize that this itinerary was too much travelling. I think if i cut out Spain in general, Venice, Bern, Lausanne and Luzern and Cologne then it will be more reasonable. My friend that lives in Germany said that Cologne is worth visiting, but i dont know, perhaps i will cut out hamburg too.
Also, i have been to europe b4. I actually just spent 3 weeks there last summer, so i think i do know how big it is. Also, my friend and I that are going arent big drinkers. I will probably go to clubs/bars twice a week or so.
And when i was in europe last summer, half of the museums that i went to gave student discounts, and so does eurorail. I think its $200 cheaper if you under 26. I understand that my lodging budget it too low. But it seems like you can get a hostel for about 30 euros a night?

What would be the best way to travel Europe solo?

I am turning 18 this April, and plan on moving to Scotland in early August. Before I go, I am currently planning a 6-8 week backpacking/walking/train/bus/hitch hiking trip starting in Egypt, and working my way to Greece (Athens, Sparta), Italy (Rome, Tuscanny, Sicily), Spain (Barcelona, Madrid), France (Paris, Chombard, beaches?), Ireland (Dublin) , Scotland (Edinburgh, plus some smaller more cummute villages?), England and to Amsterdam, and maybe Rotterdam. I want to go in early May and/or stay no later than early July. Money isn’t really an issue, although I would like to not spend a rediculous amount. If your a local, or have knowledge of traveling any of these places, then please let me know some traveling tips and planning ideas!!
