I originally wanted to travel from Thailand to Vietnam by train, but there isn’t one all the way through. I could, however, take a train from Bangkok to the Mekong River and then theoretically take a boat down the river through Cambodia and Vietnam to get to Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City, and then use to Vietnamese trains from there.

I know this would work in a world without borders (which unfortunately doesn’t exist in real life). Is it possible for me to legally cross the borders via the Mekong? If so, are there any complications (like need to get a visa in advance or in a different way then normal for instance)?
Also, what is the legality of going the other way on the Mekong River and using it to enter China?
Thanks!
