How long does it take by train to go from London to Liverpool?

I’m from Washington, DC and I’m travelling to London this summer and REALLY want to go to Liverpool to see all the Beatles attractions like The Beatles Story museum.

Also, is it possible for me to leave London for Liverpool in the morning and come back at night? Or is the journey too long?

There is a train station near to where I live, but it doesn’t have a ticket machine. Instead it has a ‘Permti to Travel’ Please could someone tell me how these work.. do I have to guess the amount to put in?
