Coco21 asked:

Trains leave Brisbane for Toowoomba on the hour every hour and trains leave Toowoomba for Brisbane on the hour every hour. In each case the jounrney takes 3 hours 45 minutes. If you catch a train from Toowoomba for Brisbane at 12 noon, how many Toowoomba-bound trains will you pass during your journey?

Please show your steps in how you figured this out.
thx.

Why is rail travel so unpopular in the US, even in high-density regions?

Category: Rail — Tags: , , – @ 5:38 pm
mogu mogu paku paku asked:

The usual answer given to the question “why is rail travel unpopular in America” is obviously:

“It’s a big, rich country. Travelling by plane makes a lot more sense.”

Point taken. Only idiots would invest in a high-speed passenger railway between, say, San Francisco and New York.

So, let’s focus on journeys of 100-300 miles within high-density “corridors” such as the Northeast. Here, it’s usually a choice between trains and cars, not trains and planes.

Take the Northeast for example: its population, area and population density are all comparable to France’s. Logically, the Northeast has the nation’s highest rate of rail travel (I read somewhere that it accounts for over 90% of rail journeys in the US!). It also boasts the nation’s only high-speed line: the Acela Express. So perhaps the Northeast alone has a rate of rail travel comparable to that in Europe?

Wrong. The ENTIRE Amtrak network, including lines in the Northeast, served only 26 million passengers in 2007. By contrast, Britain’s long-distance rail companies (National Express, Virgin, Cross Country) carried around 60 million passengers in total. Passenger figures are higher still in France, Germany and Japan.

… Which means that Northeasterners are choosing to drive long distances rather than take the train.

Some might say: “Driving is part of American culture. We’re used to it.”

But it didn’t always use to be this way, did it? Weren’t America’s railways once the envy of the world? Why did the development of rail travel in the US stop sometime around the 1950s? Why did the US government allow the nation’s railways to become a relic from bygone days?

I eagerly await your answers.
A sub-question:

Why did cars eclipse trains in the US, even in high-density regions, while trains in Europe and Japan developed alongside automobiles and eventually surpassed them in speed and efficiency?

Exploring wild America without a car (for spring break!)?

Allan Z asked:

I am really interesting in exploring the natural and wild scenes along the East Cost of the US. Since I am originally from Oregon (and going to school in Philadelphia right now), I especially crave seeing the great forests and mountains again.

I currently have no car, and can only travel by bus, train or plane. I would really appreciate it if you guys could recommend some great nature scenes that are worth going to, and can easily be accessible (such as hikes, etc) without driving.

Thanks!!

Travelling by train in England and Germany?

Category: Other - Europe — Tags: , , – @ 6:26 pm
sparx_91 asked:

Hey everyone,

So I’m going to be flying over from America to England in early september. I’m having a mini-vacation in Germany (2 days), before catching a hop-flight to London.

I’d like to buy a train pass that covers all of England and Germany for 3 days. (I have to travel by rail from London to my school, as well).
Could anyone recommend some cheap passes that include both of these countries?

Im 17, so I should be classified as a youth passenger, if that helps.

Thanks in advance for any info. =D

Questions about traveling across America?

Questions about traveling across America?
Okay here’s the deal. I’m a girl (obviously) lol and I haven’t been to many places so I decided that, when I finish college, I’m going to do some some serious traveling around the continental US. I also would like it to be as cheap and safe as possible.

I have a few questions…

1.) How much would it cost me if I wanted to see: 19 states and 10 National State Parks?

-The states I want to see are: Arizona, Utah, Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming, Tennessee, Arkansas, Main, New Mexico, Texas, North Carolina, Louisiana, Illinois, Washington D.C., New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Virgina and Georgia.

2.) Is it possible to see all these places within a 2 month period? Or should I say, is 2 months a good length of time for my excursion?

3.) Which would be better on my wallet and SAFER? Car, train or plane?

and

4.) What’s my best route? Where should I start? I think it would be best to start on the west coast and work my way towards the East coast because that’s where I live.

Thanks!

How long does it take by train to go from London to Liverpool?

Category: London — Tags: , , – @ 2:49 pm
WakeUpWakeUp asked:

I’m from Washington, DC and I’m travelling to London this summer and REALLY want to go to Liverpool to see all the Beatles attractions like The Beatles Story museum.

Also, is it possible for me to leave London for Liverpool in the morning and come back at night? Or is the journey too long?

Any other general advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated! THANKS SO MUCH!
